When a poll question closes and I post a new poll, I'll tabulate the results and publish them on the "What's New" page. Eventually they'll move here, with the most recent listed at the top.
JUNE 2004 POLL RESULTS: The question was, "If a dramatized film about Eva Cassidy is made, would you want to see it?" Most people said yes but some disagreed or weren't sure (I have mixed feelings myself, and I've actually written a screenplay about Eva). Full results:
No, I don't think Eva's story should be dramatized (39) 11%
Yes, I'd definitely want to see it (271) 78%
I'm not sure (37) 10%
Total votes 347.
MAY 2004 POLL RESULTS: The question was "Where have you purchased your Eva Cassidy albums (primarily)?" Local music stores are in first place, which is the way it should be. Amazon came in second. Complete results follow:

APRIL 2004 POLL RESULTS: This one required a bit of effort, for the people who chose to participate. The question was about the four articles about Eva which are listed as "The Best Articles" on the "Articles Page." These are (in chronological order): "Echoes of a Voice Stilled Too Early" was written for the Washington Post by Richard Harrington, in November 1996. "When Chuck Met Eva," by Jefferson Morley, appeared in the Washington Post Magazine on March 9, 1998. The article from Washingtonian Magazine, by Sherri Dalphonse, was published in the May 2001 issue. The most recent article, "The Afterlife of Eva Cassidy" by Dorian Lynskey, appeared in Word Magazine in the UK in the fall of 2003.
Fifty people participated in the poll and I know it was hard to vote for only one of these excellent articles! The winner, by a four-vote margin, was "When Chuck Met Eva" by Jefferson Morley, followed by Richard Harrington's "Echoes of a Voice Stilled Too Early." Complete results are as follows:
"When Chuck Met Eva" by Jefferson Morley (18) 36%
"Echoes of a Voice Stilled Too Early" by Richard Harrington (14) 28%
"Songbird" by Sherri Dalphonse (11) 22%
"The Afterlife of Eva Cassidy" by Dorian Lynskey (7) 14%
Total votes 50.

Notes on this poll: Many thanks to the people in the on-line discussion groups for helping me narrow down the choices. Though they didn't narrow them down enough -- I ended up having to decide "no duets with Chuck" since the previous poll was about the duets, and still had a few too many! Unfortunately, for reasons I cannot fathom, the poll had a problem recording any votes for "You've Changed." I reported the problem to the poll service, but since I know the results for the song to be inaccurate, I left it off the list of results.
JANUARY 2004 POLL RESULTS: The question was 'Which "Chuck and Eva" duet is your favorite?' The winner was my own favorite, "You Don't Know Me," with 17%, the duet version of "Fever" coming in second and "The Christmas Song" third. A new poll will be offered soon. The complete results are as follows:
You Don't Know Me (61) 17%
Fever (on THE OTHER SIDE) (48) 14%
The Christmas Song (39) 11%
Need Your Love So Bad (35 ) 10%

I'll Go Crazy (9) 2%

DECEMBER 2003 POLL RESULTS: The question was "How often do you go to hear live local music?" This was, of course, my shameless attempt to encourage all of you to do just that! "Sometimes" was the most common answer at 31%. Let's make 2004 a great year for enjoying the wonderful performers in your own part of the world. Complete poll results are as follows:
All the time (more than once a week) (20) 5%
Very Often (approximately weekly) (30) 8%
Often (approximately monthly) (54) 15%
Sometimes (a few times a year) (108) 31%
Rarely (once a year or less) (84) 24%
Never (20) 5%
I'm not saying, but I'll try to get out more (27) 7%
Total votes 343.
Regarding the above poll results, I am reminded of a conversation I had recently with a local folk/rock performer who greatly admires Eva's music. She said that it really annoys her when people tell her about having "discovered" a great singer named Eva Cassidy: "I'll tell them, 'You know, she was local. You could have gone to see her. Where were you?' " Is this a little harsh? Or not? If you think about it, the true "patrons of the arts" aren't the millionaire donors. They're the people who come out to appreciate the performances. There are many of them, but never enough.
OCTOBER 2003 POLL RESULTS: The question was "Have you ever 'requested' a radio station to play Eva's music?" Only 29% reported "Yes"; 36% promise to do it soon, and 33% reported merely "No." 355 people participated in the poll. The complete results are as follows:
Yes, many times (49) 13%
Yes, once or twice (60) 16%
No, but I promise I will soon! (128) 36%
No (118) 33%
Total votes 355.
SEPTEMBER 2003 POLL RESULTS: The September question was "Which song on the new album AMERICAN TUNE is your favorite?" 619 people voted in the poll, which suggests that it was a good idea to put it on the "What's New" page! The top song, winning by a mile, is "You Take My Breath Away." Here are the full results:
You Take My Breath Away (164) 26%
True Colors (103) 16%
The Water is Wide (81) 13%

JULY 2003 POLL RESULTS: The question was, "When you first became interested in Eva's music, did you know that she had died?" 284 people responded "Yes, I knew." 226 people said "No, I didn't know," and 17 voted for "I was an Eva fan prior to her death." I find these results very interesting, because it shows that only slightly more than half of the respondents could have associated any kind of "sad story" pathos with the music they were hearing.
JUNE 2003 POLL RESULTS: The June 2003 poll question was: "Which Eva Cassidy album do you LISTEN TO the most?" The winner was SONGBIRD, which has also been the bestselling album. Here are the full results:

MAY 2003 POLL RESULTS: The May 2003 Poll Question was "What Eva Cassidy song do you consider to be the biggest 'tearjerker'?" The question was inspired by the recent popularity of a "tearjerker" compilation album, which was such a bestseller in the United Kingdom that it was parodied in a television comedy sketch -- using Eva's music! Now to the results: "Fields of Gold," "Over the Rainbow," and "I Know You By Heart" were the top three. The complete vote tallies are as follows:
Fields of Gold (106 votes)
Over the Rainbow (100 votes)

APRIL 2003 POLL RESULTS: The question was "What Country or Continent Are You From?" I consulted the statistics page to decide which countries to list individually and which to list collectively (such as "Africa"). I'm not sure how revealing this poll actually is, since only a tiny minority of visitors to the site ever vote in the poll (over 700 visitors every day; only about 500 votes in the poll every month). In particular, people who do not read English easily are less likely to visit the far corners of the site. I think the population of the United Kingdom has more Eva-awareness, as a whole, than that of the United States; however, the US has a much larger population, so it is no surprise that 40% of the 557 respondents come from that country. English-speaking countries, when added together, totalled 77% of the respondents.
Here are the full results, with the countries listed in order of votes received:
United States (225) 40%
United Kingdom (127) 22%
Canada (49) 8%
Australia (28) 5%

The winner was SONGBIRD, with 34% of the vote. LIVE AT BLUES ALLEY was second, with 22%. It is interesting to note that LIVE AT BLUES ALLEY won this poll last time, when only 200 votes were cast in total. Complete alphabetical results are as follows:

JANUARY 2003 POLL RESULTS: The January 2003 poll question was about the Eva Cassidy Guestbook, one of the most popular features on this website (though it does have its occasional problems). NOVEMBER 2002 POLL RESULTS: The November 2002 poll question was "HOW DID YOU COME TO THIS EVA CASSIDY WEB SITE TODAY?" Almost half of the people who participated in the poll had found the site via a search engine. About 40% were frequent visitors, some of whom started with the "Welcome Page," others coming directly to "What's New." Here are the full results:

STRICTLY CURIOSITY (posted halfway through the month): OK, everybody, I've got to ask a question. I was looking at the results of the current Eva Cassidy Poll, and so far 46 people said they are regular visitors to the website, who came directly to the "Welcome" page. Will some of you 46 people please tell me WHY? The "Welcome" page almost never changes, and "What's New" gets updated constantly. I have always assumed that all the regular visitors came straight there, which is apparently not the case. Just curious. -- Laura
**UPDATE: Several of you wrote to explain why you come to the "Welcome" page first! Sasa in Croatia and Bill in the US both say it's a matter of habit. Cynthia in the US comments, "I like the picture that welcomes me to her website as well as the words contained there." I can certainly understand that. Years ago, when I upgraded my website to consist of more than one page, I was looking for a truly striking image for the opening page. I was thrilled when Eileen White offered me the graphic of the EVA BY HEART poster. (Thanks again to her and to Liaison Records for giving me permission to reproduce it.) The photo was taken by Matthew Dols a week after the album LIVE AT BLUES ALLEY was recorded. **MORE UPDATES: Gerry in Nova Scotia helped me understand why some people responded "OTHER" in the poll. He writes, "Probably, many of us have the Guestbook bookmarked, then when we have seen the day's entries, go directly to the 'What's New' page. That sequence isn't a selection on the poll."
OCTOBER 2002 POLL RESULTS: The October question was, "How long have you been an Eva Cassidy fan?" (One presumes that only Eva's fans were visiting this website and participating in the poll!) 620 people voted in the poll. A surprisingly high number, 29 people, had only known Eva's music for a few hours, so they must have wasted no time searching for her on the Internet! Most of the respondents, 51%, had been Eva fans for one to three years. This was no surprise, because during that time period the great surge in Eva-awareness took place, beginning with airplay on BBC Radio 2, then the radio documentary, the Top of the Pops 2 video broadcast, the films and articles about Eva, and the publication of the biography. A modest 3% had been Eva fans for 6 years or longer, probably mostly Eva's friends and the other fortunate few who heard her perform live. Here are the full poll results:
A few hours (29) 4%
A few days (34) 5%
A few weeks (57) 9%
A few months (114) 18%
About a year (172) 27%
2-3 years (152) 24%
4-5 years (39) 6%
6 years or longer (23) 3%
Total votes 620.
SEPTEMBER 2002 POLL RESULTS: The September 2002 poll question was: "Which song on the new album IMAGINE is your favorite?" The results were fascinating, because every song received a healthy number of votes. FEBRUARY 2002 POLL RESULTS: The response was decisive. The overwhelming winner was "Fields of Gold," and I think it would probably have won even without the Michelle Kwan factor. Before I list the complete results, I need to tell you that I have no personal knowledge that such a video even exists. I have been shown portions of the videotape made at Blues Alley in January of 1996, but "Fields of Gold" was not one of the songs I have seen. This is all purely hypothetical ! Also, I can't figure out why the percentages don't add up to 100% but I presume it is something to do with rounding (please don't tell me more, I don't really want to know). That being said, here are the full results:
Question: If you could see a video clip of ONE of the songs from the album LIVE AT BLUES ALLEY, which would you choose?

Total number of votes : 243.
**UPDATE: I asked Bryan McCulley about whether he had a videotape of Eva singing "Fields of Gold." He replied, "There is no video of 'Fields of Gold.' As you know, Eva recorded two nights with two shows each night. I was at the first show both nights and videoed a little the first night (maybe 4 songs) and videoed the entire first show the second night. She did not perform 'Fields of Gold' while I was videoing. As I'm sure you also know, they didn't use anything that was recorded the first night on the album." (At right, Eva and Raice)
JANUARY 2002 POLL RESULTS: The winner is... "Radio airplay on BBC Radio 2"! Barely edged out of first place is what I call "Evangelism" -- "Another Eva fan played her music for me." The US network television program "Nightline" and BBC's "Top of the Pops 2" came next. I consulted a statistician and learned that the differences between 1 & 2, and between 3 & 4, are "not statistically significant." Therefore I decree the results to be a tie in first place between BBC Radio 2 and the fans, and a television tie in second place between ABC and the BBC.
I found these poll results to be interesting because they show that many factors have been involved. I correctly anticipated the top four answers, though not their order, but I was surprised that "Through the Internet" and "Other" received more votes than "Tonight with Trevor McDonald" and "NPR Morning Edition." Despite the fact that Eva's music is now on dozens of compilation albums, very few people seem to have heard Eva's music for the first time by that means. Similarly, I know that "Tonight with TM" and "NPR Morning Edition" had large audiences, but at least among the Internet users who responded to the poll question, it was not their first exposure to Eva's music.
Here are the full results:
