The first song I heard by Eva was about 3 months ago on BBC Radio Kent. I was doing my early shift as a HGV Technician on my own. When she started to sing "Over The Rainbow". I had to sit down and listen to to this voice which was so BEAUTIFUL So full of Passion and love. I am Irish & 46 & I have never heard anyone sing like she did that morning. I just sat there until she finished the song and cried my eyes out & I could not understand why I had never heard her on the radio before. The presenter then told the story of her life after her song was played & I knew then that I had to get her CD's. My daughter got me her book for Xmas & I cant wait to read it.[with anticipation]

My husband found "Songbird" because it was a featured CD at the local bookstore, thank goodness. We listened to it on New Year's Day, and almost wept. Eva has inspired me to pursue my dream of singing more feverishly, because when you listen to her sing, you can hear that she truly feels it! While the pen can truly be mightier than the sword, I still feel that words cannot do justice to the talent known as Eva Cassidy. What an incredible woman and performer! I have just received the "Songbird" book for Xmas, and I am thrilled to discover Eva's background and family history. Ever since hearing her soulful vocals, I have been in awe of Eva, and to finally gain some insight into her personal life, upbringing, and character is so fulfilling for me. I personally believe that for an artist to receive praise of this magnitude posthumously is very saddening, but I would love to think that Eva's spirit, which lives on in the hearts of thousands of people the world over, is burning brighter than ever before and is very much aware of the impression she has made on her audience. Her loss to this world is a great tragedy, but she will NEVER be forgotten for her achievements and the heartfelt pleasure she has given to all her listeners. For all the rest of my days, never could I wish to hear a purer voice of heart-rending beauty than that of Eva Cassidy. Nothing less than truly phenomenal!

I am lucky enough to have a video recording of the same Nightline programme to which you refer. You are not alone, it also makes me cry.
I recently video recorded Eva signing 'Over the Rainbow' on Top of The Pops2 (UK music programme). This is the only live footage of Eva I've seen on UK TV. It too brings teardrops to my eyes. No other performer has had such a profound effect on me.

I first heard Eva Cassidy on my brother's CD player on the 2 days ago! It was from the songbird album and the title was 'The Autumn Leaves'. I was completely taken aback when I heard the first few notes. Her rendition of that old jazz standard was so soulful that I felt like a needle stinging the very bottom of my heart.
Reading the album sleeve told me about her sad ending.
Maybe I was being emotional, but I felt like my life was being changed listening to her voice. I also listened to "Over the rainbow" and "Fields of gold" as I knew these songs and I must say that Eva has given complete new life to them.
It's been only 2 days since then and I am looking forward to discovering her other works. I believe I like her best her music is sad . Can fans out there point to me which albums I should be listening to? Does 'Live at blues alley" has that melancholic undertone? I am also interested to know if there are any videos of her available. I would be very grateful to anyone of you if you can provide me with these information.

As I am a big jazz/blues fan I naturally gravitate towards the album which, in my view, features more traditional jazz/blues tracks. I have all 6 albums and think you might like "Time after Time". As with all Eva albums, there is a variety of styles on each one. This album features Eva's version of the old Joni Mitchell classic 'Woodstock'. Eva's version is absolutely superb. No question, it's the best there is. Maybe another fan will be able to tell you whether Eva wrote any songs herself. I don't know.

All of Eva's albums feature tracks that are 'melancholic'. Some more than others. One thing is for certain, you will want every album. I did. They're all very special. The more you listen, the more you'll want to listen. There can never be too much Eva.

Absolutely incredible....I am still stunned. I heard Fields of Gold about a year ago, and could not get it out of my mind. But I didn't know who it was. Later, in a record store, Songbird was on display in the listening section. I played that song over and over, transfixed, blown away, speechless..... and I bought it for myself for Christmas. I've listened to it several dozens of times since... I can't explain this thing...it's been a long time since a song or singer affected me this much. I'm writing from rural Ontario Canada and can attest to the fact that Eva's music, incredible talent and vocal passion are alive and well everywhere!
I am wondering about the story behind, "I know you by heart" which makes me weep every time I hear it. In fact, in the car sometimes, I have to pull over. It's the song I will have played for the funeral of my loved ones and myself when the time comes.
Almost the same is almost true Over the Rainbow and I can't think of another artist whose voice has such consistent power to move me. What a gift to have been introduced to her!

Eva has been such an inspiration to me. It's a shame she had to die at such a young age. Her voice is magical. I heard her on Terry Wogan and was so moved by the purity of her interpretation. Fields of gold should be an anthem for everyone, somewhere over the rainbow is where she surely must be, still singing. The book is just wonderful. Her parents gave us a pure spirit for us all to aspire to. Her talent is overwhelming and her voice poignant and uplifting in what can be such a callous world. I first heard Eva on totp 2 programme singing Over the Rainbow and was in awe of the beauty and depth of her voice, so much so that like many other fans I was moved to tears. The Trevor MacDonald programme fascinated me even further but this was tinged with sadness when I learned of her very premature death. I have 4 of her albums and the book Songbird which I have just finished reading, and her sincerity and beauty is so evident. Her strong principles and love of life is humbling, and I find myself saddened that she is no longer with us to share her wonderful talent and to touch the emotions of so many of us. I heard Eva on our local indie station (KVMR, NEvada City, CA) , called the presenter to find out who it was. I later looked up the website to find out more. Am I glad I did! For Christmas I sent a copy of "Songbird" to my grandaughter in the DC area - she's an aspiring guitarist (Fender Telecaster, Big Amp) - when she played the CD, she went right out and bought an acoustic Ibanez! She'll need it next year anyway, I don't think they allow Telecasters in the dorm. Anyway, yesterday I heard a few bars of "Wonderful World" on another station presenting the favorites of the presenter (Mick Martin's Blues Show on KXJZ, Sacramento)- I thought it was DeeDee Bridgewater! When Mick back-announced it was Eva, well you guessed it - I went home and ordered it over the 'net. I'll remember where I was when I heard it forever, just like when I heard "Over the Rainbow" by Sarah - the room I was in, the weather, the radio it was on - and I still haven't heard a complete Eva song!

About six months ago I was at a function where the cover band was playing amazing music with an awesome female voice, during intervals - I was mesmerised. I inquired as to who the singer was - it was from that moment that I was hooked on Eva.
I have five CDs and the Songbird book and still can't get enough. My partner affectionately refers to her as Saint Eva, as I listen to her amazing voice and compilations time and time again - and re-read portions of the book at every opportunity.
I was delighted to see a great article on Eva in the Saturday edition of the Sydney Morning Herald recently - yep - she is very much alive in Australia as well.
My gratitude to Eva's family and all those with enough faith to keep the spirit alive. She makes me feel more alive every time I listen to her - it's like she's a part of me.
I cannot express how delighted I am to have found Eva Cassidy.

This is my favourite Eva song too. If you want to know more about IKYBH and other Eva recorded material, go to the Homepage on this website and click on Exclusive Interviews. One of the first items is, The Making of the Album Eva By Heart - an interview in 1999 by the Web Host, Laura (Eva's cousin) with Chris Biondo, Eva's longtime friend and producer. In the interview Chris gives us more information on how Eva came to record IKYBH. When Laura asks Chris what he would play for someone who had never heard Eva sing, it is this song that he chooses.
When you have time, I strongly recommend you try out all the other articles, interviews, etc., on this site, they will give you an all-round picture of Eva as a person and musician. If you haven't already, you should purchase all of Eva's CD's as it is only when you have heard the amazing range of her repertoire that you can fully appreciate just what an outstanding artist she truly is. I would also recommend that you get hold of the biography on Eva published just this year (see the link in What's New on the homepage) which doesn't go into depth about Eva's musical life but does give a wonderful insight into Eva the person by those who knew her best - her family and friends.

Was bought Songbird for this xmas, and am ashamed to say had not heard of Eva before. my taste in music is very wide and what really bowls me over of what I have heard so far is the eclecticism of her musical styles, and how she gives completely new twist to songs I have long known, like the swinging version of Had I A Golden Thread. Now that I have become acquainted with her music I am eagerly seeking out more CDs, and als information about this remarkable talent. The sparse biographical data on Songbird, is unbearably sad, especially when you think of where her talent could have led. What she has left is obviously a major achievement and for now while sad at her early death, am grateful for the bird in hand that she has left.

No other artist has had such an impact on me than Eva Cassidy. Her voice is so beautiful. I plan to collect all of her other albums because I love Songbird so much. I bought the book and loved it. It was interesting to hear about her life from those who knew her and it was particularly sad to hear of her rapid decline. I think what makes her music so moving is that she sang from the heart and she 'lived' the music. She wasn't interested in fame and fortune, she just wanted to sing.
I listen to her music a lot and every time I get blown away by her incredible talent. I'm hooked!
I would like to thank Eva's parents, Mr and Mrs Cassidy, for allowing her story to be brought to the world through the book. Eva lives on through her wonderful music and music is a wonderful gift. She will never be forgotten. I'm so glad she shared her talent with the world and enriched our lives with her music.

I was listening to a local radio station last weekend when I heard Eva Cassidy for the first time. Her rendition of Over the Rainbow was so stunning, I had to hear more of her music. Within several days I have collected four of her CD's and have a fifth on order. Becoming so rapidly and totally enchanted by a person's ability to make music has rarely, if ever, happened to me. She just has a way of helping you reconnect to all of the good and simple things in life.
On learning of her departure from this world in 1996, I must say my profound sadness was quelled only by an enormous sense of gratitude. I just popped in to say Happy New Year to Eva fans over the world (maybe a little late but..)
I was listening to Norwegian radio p1 an hour ago,
and they were playing three songs of Eva in a program called "Evergreens" (or so..) They played "Kathy`s song","At last", and "Fields of gold", as far as I heard.Great!
I have a request for the next album: I read that there is a good recording of Cindy Lauper`s : "True colors".
I hope that song will be included!
Finally I have a wish for the next album: Don`t fade away the applause from the live tracks. It makes the
performance even more impressive when you know that what you hear is real live, and not a studiomix. I kind of miss the applause when I`m listening to the Songbird-album.

I discovered Eva Cassidy after hearing a local DJ play, "Over the Rainbow" on KVIL 103.7FM. I searched Ft Worth for Songbird for 2 months, it was sold out everywhere. I bought my copy at the W.O.M. in Munich, Germany, while visiting my son in Garmisch last August. I have shared her "spirit in songs" to my coworkers, friends, and family. She moves me. She has touched my soul. I was attached to the Songbird album for 16 weeks, but now I am listening to "Time after Time". I am forever amazed at her talent. I am always telling someone about her. Tonight, while driving home from work (have worked for a Dermatologist since 1985) this evening I am thinking...we need a TV movie about Eva, not only for her love of music and awesome talent, but for the reason she died--Malignant Melanoma.

First heard Eva on TOTP2 and was instantly blown away , like many others i guess, by the beauty and haunting quality of her voice. From then on I was hooked and couldn't get enough of her music. The euphoria has died down a little over here now for all things Eva, but each time I listen to her voice it sends shivers down my spine. For anyone who hasn't got the Songbird book buy it now, it's truly inspiring and humbling to hear stories of her life. I'm on my second reading since receiving it for Christmas,and the more i read the more i realise the world is a worse place without her in it. Eva gift of her music and art however will live on and that's something to be thankful for. I have been listening to her albums all over again since reading the book again and they just get better. I was browsing a Cardiff record shop in December 2000 and picked up 'Eva by Heart'in the Blues section. I didn't know the singer but I bought the CD on the strength of 'Dark End of The Street' My favourite Dan Penn song.
The CD was intended as a christmas gift for my sister but after one play I wasn't going to part with it!
I couldn't believe that I'd stumbled across such a voice by accident. I went back and bought the other CDs the next day. Since then Eva's CDs rarely stray far from my player, and her music takes pride of place in my large Blues/Jazz/Soul/Folk collection.
Needless to say my family and friends were soon listening as well.
I remember feeling robbed when I first read about Eva's early death; and having just read the excellent, and very moving, new biography I feel very sad that Eva is no longer with us.
I only hope that more of her beautiful music will be released in the near future.

Kettleby loves Eva!We are a small village in rural Ontario (hello Picton!)As I write this I am listening to one of my favourites..Songbird.
I recently attended a wonderful Christmas celebration at my neighbours home, which many of our village attended. I brought along Time after Time and Songbird to offer to play to my wonderful host, because I just knew she would love it. Upon opening the door of her home, I heard the sweet sound of Wayfaring Stranger filling this beautiful country home, glowing of candlelight and wine glasses, and I just smiled. Of course many of us there all realized that we have all discovered Eva independently of one another, and it was a wonderful feeling to be able to share her music with one another.
I gave my parents Live at Blues Alley for Christmas, and just after they opened it, I opened my gift from them...Time after Time. We shared a very warm laugh and it was again, a wonderful and rare opportunity to share beautiful music with the ones we love.

It's wonderful to see so many new people joining the Eva fan club. It never ceases to amaze me just how many there are. I have been intoxicated with Eva's voice for over 12 months. I have the 6 main albums and love every one, although I am partial to 'The Other Side' because of its Jazz/Blues content. Listening to this CD is the first thing I do when I get home from work each day. It's electric to hear Eva enter into a verse at such a high pitch, as in 'Drownin In My Own Tears'. I love this track.

My son is studying at Oxford, England right now and came to stay with us during the Xmas holidays. We were watching the Wizard of Oz, a movie that incredibly my Dutch husband had never seen. My son told me about a powerful rendition done by a little known artist and this past weekend mailed the Songbird CD to me. I was mesmerized.I played that CD all weekend long. I listened to the "Rainbow" song and thought: Well, it's lovely and obviously a different rendition. Then I heard Eva's powerful singing towards the end of the song and I held my breath while tears came to my eyes. "Songbird" also moves me deeply - one of those songs that immediately brings feelings of love tinged with sadness. Fortunately for us, we have a sterio speakers in our bathroom ceiling. I played that CD again while relaxing in our bath. It was wonderful. I went to bed with her songs in my head. I need to buy her other CDs right away. I once had this experience while reading a biography of Benjamin Franklin. He was so extraordinary to me that I read 4 more books about him. I couldn't let him go. I feel the same way now about Eva Cassidy's singing.

My father introduced me to Eva Cassidy one Sunday afternoon last year - we both saqt quiet for the whole Songbird CD and it moved me to tears and happiness at the same time. She has a way of singing a song that tells a story - whether sad or happy. My whole family now have her CDs and friends are just as enchanted. I split from my fiance last year and many of the songs on Songbird remind me of our time together - I wish I could let him know about Songbird especially the songs Autumn Leaves and I know you by heart - his son died 4 years ago and I know he would find comfort in the words and Eva's singing. It is so sad that this lovely lady departed without knowing how much joy she is bringing to a whole cross section of people. You must read the book Songbird - Eva was a special sensitive person and I for one would love to have met her - thanks to her family and friends for the insight they give us about Eva's life in the book.

As for the cd I love listening to her beautiful voice and I can appreciate her voice all the more now that I have read the book.I would like to thank her family and close friends who gave a very good insight into Eva as a person and it is good to know that she stayed true to herself and what her music meant to her....she did it her way!!

One evening for a week ago I was sitting in my living room, reading in a book and listen to the radio.
I heard a girl start singing for me a well-known song "Over the rainbow". IŽm a musician by my self
and now and then, but not so often nowedays, I get goose pimples and teardrops starts to fall from eyes when I hear a lovely melody and/or a realy good performer.
But when I listen to that song in a performance I newer heard before - so lovely, so beautifully. So well controlled and with a felling that touch my herat so close so that teardrops starts to falling from my eyes. I was wonder - Who is this aoutstanding singer?
After the song a radio voice mention that the singers name was Eva Cassidy - A name that I never heard before.

I saw it printed on one of the "Eva Cassidy" wibsites: "It is the same story, the World over, every time anyone hears Eva Cassidy's voice for the first time.
You stop what you are doing and you listen. Then you rush out and buy the other CDs." So it was with me... I was watching Michelle Kwan skate to "Fields of Gold," and I was mezmorized. I don't think I even breathed, but I must have, because it brought me to tears. I thought, "Who is singing that?!" The commentator said the music was "Fields of Gold" by Sting, and I thought, "But WHO IS SINGING THIS?!!!!" Just like many before me..I was home onde day listening to the local smooth jazz station when I hear this heavenly voice singing Fields of Gold. I sat up, went to the stereo and intently listened and wondering who it was. The DJ said the artist name after the song and I scribbled it down, then was stunned to hear Eva had died in 1996 at 33 (the same age I am). A week later I heard her Over the Rainbow and was convinced to buy everything Eva ever recorded. What a sad loss but the Lord has a beautiful voice in heaven and we were left with a hauntingly beautiful legacy. Thank you Eva!!!

I have yet to listen to this cd without crying. The sheer beauty of her voice moves me to tears, and the loss of such a talent is heartbreaking. Her voice transcends time, the beauty of the words in much of her songs, have such relevence, especially now. I try not to think of her as being gone, but it is still something I think about whenever I hear her voice, and it chokes me up. It saddens me that I had never heard about her until her death, as many of my friends. I wish we had known about her before, so that she would have known how many people were moved by her music, I'm sure somewhere out there she does, still it's not the same. It's so sad to think we'll never hear anything new from this artist. In the days where so many people seem so filled with self-importance and superficiality, she had a larger view, a bigger message. I was totally mesmerised by Ms. Cassidy's voice when I heard her version of Over The Rainbow on our National Radio Station 2FM. I immediately bought the album 'Songbird' and was blown away by the sheer power, emotion and versatility of one voice. I recieved the book 'Songbird' as a Christmas gift and from the time that I opened it, I could not put it down. She truly was a unique woman in many ways. I am saddened that she didn't receive the acclaim that she totally deserved while still alive. The music world is a poorer place without her. Well, the woman certainly had a set of pipes. Unfortunatley we will never know, as she matured, if she would have gained the discretion to resist oversinging almost every song. When you have a voice, as Ms. Cassidy clearly had, that could do just about anything the question is not; what to sing? but what not to sing? Techincal facility is not necessarily a barometer of an artist's worth. We live in times where the mindless histrionic tyranny of Mariah and Whitney sets the standard for what is "good" vocalizing. Fortunately, Eva liked all the right people: most notably Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughn. Both of these great ladies had the chops to shred notes in every line and had the good taste not to. Choice of material is also critical. Eva'a ear was good but rarely did she allow the song to sing itself - which is another sign of a vocalist who hasn't quite gotten there yet. Again, it's very sad that she passed before her time. However, I honestly believe that were she alive, she would say to each of us - "Listen to what came before. Ella, Sarah, Billie, Armstrong, Etta James - and you will understand me." Don't do Eva the disservice of listening to her in a vacume.

I will have to respectfully disagree with Mr. Barley as to Miss Cassidy "oversinging". From a purely academic musical standpoint, I can understand his position (but I don't concur). However, I don't think that whether or not she is a technically perfect vocalist matters to the vast majority of Miss Cassidy's fans and followers. What matters most is Miss Cassidy's remarkable gift to re-intrepret songs and present them to the audience in such a fashion so as to stir one's soul and make one's skin tingle.
Moreover, I think most of Miss Cassidy's followers are music lovers and are a well rounded lot in their musical tastes. I think we who care to know about Eva, know who her influences are and are certainly aware of the great female vocalists who came before her. However, I think the real point and differentiating factor between Miss Cassidy and the other vocalists is she has managed to stir the hearts and souls of so many people in a way that may be unparalleled.

Along with Eric from Maryland I very respectfully disagree with Mr Barley assertion that Eva "oversings". The "Golden Thread" of the vast majority of Eva's fans who use this Guestbook speak of the joy Eva has given them and the stirring of their hearts and souls. I am with Eric from Silver Spring, Maryland on this one.
Mr. Barley is entitled to his own opinions and that's exactly what they are, his opinions. My opinions are different. I too think Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holliday and Etta James are fine examples of jazz/blues singers, particularly Ella Fitzgerald whom I consider to be the best of the three. Eva has her own style for jazz/blues and I like it very much. I also don't agree with Mr. Barley that Eva did not have enough time to progress her talent. Eva cannot possibly be compared with Mariah or Whitney. Principally, these two ladies have powerful voices and therefore do tend to overdo their performances in order to show off their virtuosity. However, I think it is invariably the same kind of performance for every song. I see you have 'The Other Side' which is my favourite Eva album. Eva's version of 'Stormy Monday' from the 'Live at Blues Alley' cd is the best I've heard bar none. Her individual treatment of 'Woodstock' hasn't been bettered by anybody. These are my opinions.
The truth is we shall never be able to examine the differences. How can we know that Ella would have been able to sing 'Over the Rainbow' or 'Woodstock', or many other examples, in a style that she was unaccustomed to. I know my music and I certainly don't listen to Eva in a vacuum. I choose to listen to Eva because she is the best overall singer that I have ever heard. Now that's my opinion. Who is to say which one us is right, or indeed whether we are both wrong. Everyone has there own opinion but there is no doubting Eva's following around the world and it has nothing to do with hype or musical ignorance on the part of the buying public.

I, too, must take vehement yet respectful exception to Mr. Barley's comments about Eva "oversinging" her songs in the manner of a Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, or any of the other pop "divas" of the day. Oversinging is obviously a matter of perception- to a degree. But to intimate that Eva oversings the vast majority of her songs shows to me a lack of understanding of what the art of singing is all about. He states: "Unfortunately we will never know, as she matured, if she would have gained the discretion to resist oversinging almost every song." Almost EVERY song??? Which ones?? Give me some examples, please! Off the top of my head I came up with a dozen that I feel are most definitely "undersung": Fields of Gold, Over the Rainbow, Autumn Leaves, almost the entire 'Time After Time' CD, Tall Trees, What a Wonderful World, You Don't Know Me, to be specific. My big attraction to Eva is precisely the fact that she DOESN'T oversing like the Mariah Careys of the world. The true measure of great singing is not "what is left out" or whether it is oversung or undersung, but rather: does the singer successfully convey the emotion of the song to the listener? Does the singer successfully convey HER emotions about the song to the listener? Eva is THE MASTER in that regard and could have taught a thing or two to Ella and Sarah, et al, in my estimation.
Mr. Barley also states: "Eva'a ear was good but rarely did she allow the song to sing itself - which is another sign of a vocalist who hasn't quite gotten there yet." I challenge him to listen to Ella singing Fine and Mellow, You've Changed and Honeysuckle Rose (my reference for those tunes is the CD "Ella and Basie: A Perfect Match") and compare those to Eva's versions. I think Eva definitely "got there" with those three tunes when compared with Ella's versions. She showed a maturity well beyond her age and years of experience in her phrasing, styling and musicianship. We can only wonder how much better Eva would have been had she had Ella's 50+ years of experience to draw from, but she obviously did her homework, like Mr. Barley suggests, and learned from the best in the short time she had to master her craft.
Mr. Barley's final comment is: "Don't do Eva the disservice of listening to her in a vacume." Lest I come off as mindlessly defending Eva against all negative comments just for the sake of appearing to be her ever-loyal "biggest fan", Mr. Barley's comments did cause me to listen to Eva with a critical ear again after having taken her art for granted for a while since I first discovered her talents about two years ago. I especially compared her with Ella, my personal choice as "greatest female singer of them all" until Eva came along. Despite her relatively few years of experience compared to Ella and all the rest at their respective primes, Eva's unique style, passion, musicianship and artistry still place her head and shoulders above anyone else I can think of. When I first heard Eva sing Over the Rainbow I realized she had just raised the standard and redefined what truly great music should be: a soulful, emotionally moving, personal experience between performer and listener. Let the rest of the world now attempt to match her.
I have listened to all types of music (not just pop and jazz) constantly since I was a young boy, played in many various groups and taught music for 6 years in public schools, so I feel my opinion carries at least a bit of validity.

Maybe I don't get it, as you say. You may be right. I've been wrong before. On the other hand Ella and Sarah had more complete voices with greater ranges, Billie Holiday had phrasing that is more original and stunning in it's economy than anythingt being heard today. But I admit I've only been listening to Eva for a few days. She is a major talent. However, would she have become a major artist? Two very different questions, which unfortuately her tragic death will forever leave unanswered.
Your slightly hostile, sarcastic and dismissive one line email to me is not a very good indicator of who, how and where her fans really are.

My apologies for apparently stepping on so many toes. Clearly we're not talking about music but some sort of idolatry. After all the word "fan" has its roots in fanatic.
Regarding your comment about Eva and Elvis doing a heavenly duet. I think the comparison is apt. To begin with, they're both white and they're both dead. More importantly, they both could and did use black intonation and phrasing in many of their vocals.
I think a large part of Elvis' success was in that regard, just as Eva's is. It is still safer for white folks to embrace someone who "sounds" black than someone who is black. And it is certainly easier for white folks to idolize a young dead white woman who sounds black than jump in to the pop world of belligerent urban angst or go back twenty, thirty, forty years to a time that is not their own to appreciate acknowledged masters (ie Ell a, Sarah, etc.).

I have only just heard my first song from Eva today and I can only but pray that someone will remember me when I have gone the way Eva, in her song: I KNOW YOU BY HEART, makes me to see every true love that has gone before me and remember them DEEPLY. Forgive me Laura but just one more comment, please.
If there is one thing Mr. Barley has learned from visiting this wonderful website is to NEVER EVER leave his e-mail address. There is a 100% loyal fan base here. Young and old, male and female, from many different cultures around the world. I love my music, particularly jazz/blues, and there have been many brilliant performers over the years. Of course opinions can only be subjective. I have heard Billie Holiday performing many of the tracks Eva has covered. Her style is different from Eva's but variations in interpretation should be expected from different artists. In my opinion, Eva has one thing the others haven't got and that's the ability to make you feel you are listening to more than music.
Three days isn't quite long enough to form an opinion. Listen to Eva in a vacuum for a few weeks and I confidently expect you to come back and tell us that you were a little bit hasty.
I'll give you an advance welcome to the Eva fan club.

I first encountered Eva's music about 2 weeks ago while stopping at one of the listening booths in the local Tower Records store (although I swear I saw a TV show which included her story a few years ago). I was captivated instantly by her sincerity, her purity, and her soul. Anyway, after purchasing all but one of her CD's since then (I'll get "The Other Side" ASAP), and after reading much of the info on her website, there's little I can add but my next-in-line gratitude that her music's become a part of my life. I feel for - and envy - those people who were fortunate enough to have known her personally. She's was here and gone yet living on in more and more hearts every day.
I hope that the well's not run dry on material to be released. While it may not be possible, the idea of "more music yet to be heard" feels pretty good.
I hope to run into more people whose lives are enriched by Eva's song. If not, I'll sure be doin' my part to share her music with as many as will listen.

BRILLIANT, BRILLIANT, BRILLIANT.
I, (as your normal average listener) can not find fault with Eva's style, intonation, meaning, feeling or singing ability.
What exactly does 'letting the song sing itself' mean as Simon Barley states? Well as I'm no expert I wouldn't know. What I do know is that Mariah's and Whitney's voices, style and feel pale into insignificance when compared with Eva's (and personally grate on my ears).
As for the 'old time' songbirds - I like them too for the most part. But Eva has that something 'real' that the others seem to lack.
Now for my OPINION and I dont care who I upset - but I am not a troll.... Eva's death just re-affirms my belief in atheism - why should one so talented with so much to give be taken away.....

Mr.Barley has received more attention than he deserves-his opinion reminds me of the rear end of every person-everybody has one and certainly he's entitled to his. Eva's vocal talent is certainly God given and she didn't bury it as the one person did as recorded in the New Testament, but developed it. Her talent placed her in the category of Barbara Streisand, Johnny Mathis, Elvis and a few others. Equal to her vocal ability, were her interpretations and arrangements of the songs she sang. Genius unmatched and above all- true to herself. "To thine own self be true and it must follow as the night the day thou canst not be false to any man"-Shakespeare. Accordingly, she lived her life. Her mother and father remain in my prayers.

In 1995 I read an article in the Washington Post about Eva as she was appearing at Blues
Alley that weekend.The write up enthused me so, I set out to find her CD recorded at Blues
Alley and had to finally travel to Washington to buy it.It set me back on my heels at

Yesterday, Paul Carrick was a guest on the Ken Bruce Show to choose 2 of his favourite records. Paul is lead singer with Mike and the Mechanics who had a huge transatlantic hit with "The Living Years" He said that he very rarely buys records but he is a big Sting fan, and he said that Eva sings Fields of Gold so beautifully that he just had to get it. Well if you don't 'get it' it really is no surprise. I am a big music fan with a very wide range of musical tastes - including 'old time' crooners both male and female.
If you don't 'feel' when listening to music (as most don't I find, and that includes supposed in the know critics) then you will not get this at all. I am not looking for technicalities I am looking for feeling whether sorrow or happiness related.
Eva Cassidy puts more feeling into her voice than most others I have heard. If you really know your stuff than perhaps you are aware that most singers do not 'feel' what they are singing (and again most will openly admit that) thus giving a polished but 'empty' performance.
I only became familiar with Eva's talent after her death (unfortunately) but this does make all of her works all the poignant.
I for one have problems holding back the tears whenever I hear her sing both from the feeling she puts into her performances and the sorrow of knowing that such a talented, young artist has been taken from us.
As for your comparisons with Elvis..... so.. ..... exactly how many people are you saying are wrong and YOU are right.

It just amazes me that my comments have hurt so many people's feelings. My apologies. That was not my intention. I did not realize when I was asked to go and make an entry in the Guestbook that I was being asked to leave a "love note" like they did for Princess Di. I thought an honest - and by the way not a negative - critique of what I heard was what the contributors to the Guestbook wanted. I guess not, even though I called her a "great talent" with a great "set of pipes" who was influenced by all "the right people" with a "pretty good ear" for material. Just because I don't rate her with the masters doesn't mean I don't like her.
With regard to the importance of "feeling" in both the performance and listening process, I think you are quite right. Most singers do it by rote and feel little or nothing. Listeners are even worse. Particularly so called jazz fans. As soon as the soloist begins to abstract the recognizable melody and begins to "feel" his/her way through the story he/she wants to tell, most of the audience gets bored and fatigued. It takes effort to listen. It requires a commitment to the music. I made that commitment to music 45 years ago as educator, critic, producer, presenter, broadcaster - and most importantly as a fan. In that time I have seen live (as in "in person" live) and in no particular order: Ella, Sarah, Carmen McRae, Mildred Bailey, Billie Holiday, Dianne Reeves, Diana Krall, Irene Kral, Jacque Brel, Charles Aznavor, Louis Armstrong, Pear Bailey, Louis Prima, Janis Joplin, Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, Beatles, Pink Floyd, the Mothers of Invention, Isacc Stern, Itzak Perlman, Yo Yo Ma, Wynton Marsalis, Bob Marley, Leonard Bernstien, The Who, Judy Garland, Barbra Striesand, Sinatra, Tony Bennet, Elvis, Beverley Sills, Leontyne Price, Jesse Norman, Stevie Wonder, Count Basie, Duke Ellington and as they say in the promos "a host of others". And I "felt" each one in their own unique way. Some made me "feel" more than others. Some made me "feel" better than others. or worse or different or happy or whatever. So please grant that I can "feel".
Sonny Criss was a very good alto player and my personal favorite. He committed suicide at the age of 50. I cry every time I hear his version of God Bless The Ch ild. Does that mean that he was "better" than Charlie Parker?
Absolutely not!!! But it does mean that I would rather hear Sonny Criss. It's just a matter of taste. Favorite and Best are not necessarily the same thing.
Eva Cassidy is obviously loved by many people and their taste is just as valid as mine or yours. I do not suggest that her fans "just don't get it" or that they should remove "the wax" from their ears as they have suggested to me or as you directed, "wake up . . ."
I think Eva would be appalled to know that her talent has taken a back seat, and that she now is more about "myth" than "music".

I heard a glimpse of an advertisement for a compilation album of inspirational songs on Radio Delilah,a nationally syndicated program in the US. This album apparently contains Eva's "At Last" and her name was mentioned along with a clip from the song. I couldn't make out who is putting this album out. It is interesting to me that this ad appeared on the Delilah show since I sent a couple Emails to Delilah asking her to check out Eva's albums. This ad is airing nationally it could generate considerable interest.

Enough about Simon Barley already!!! Geez, all the guy did was express an opinion. I would have hoped that Eva's fans would have been a little more open-minded. And even though I disagree with most of what he said and LOVE Eva, I'm afraid that even she probably would have agreed with his comments about her maturing as a vocalist. Remember, she didn't even want the Blues Alley CD to be released because she felt it wasn't up to her standards. Let's show a little more tolerance people.
On to more pleasant things - someone posted on here a few days ago about Eva's music on Spinner.com. If you are a blues fan I recommend Dirty Blues.com. I've been listening to their "Lady Guitar Slingers" channel and who pops up but Eva singing Let The Good Times Roll. Further proof of how her fame is spreading!

Perhaps we who are dedicated to the memory of Eva and her music ought to take some responsibility for seeking out and helping to nurture new singers who seem to have that spark which sets them apart from the general babble of contemporary popular music. I am ashamed to admit that I have been following "Pop Idols", a British TV talent show which claims to set out to discover the next major pop star. This has been running for several weeks, and contenders are whittled down after performing songs in a different style each week. The voting is carried out by viewers, following comments by a panel of "judges" representing the record industry.
This week we were down to five, four men and a girl. Most of the voters are almost certainly teenage girls, which explains why a number of talented girl singers have been eliminated in favour of mediocre but "hunky" boy singers. This week the final girl, the outstanding 16-year old Zoe Birkett, was eliminated after unwisely singing songs made hits by Whitney Houston and Jennifer Rush. Last week another fine girl singer was eliminated after the judges said she had chosen the wrong song, yet she said afterwards that the song had been recommended to her by one of these very judges. Over the weeks Zoe ha s demonstrated the ability to sing with consummate skill a wide variety of different types of song. She is also a feisty girl, and should be able to cope with the trauma of the music business, despite her tender years. This week the judges suddenly and inexplicably turned on her, after giving her rapturous praise for week after week. Did they foresee that this might be a girl who would be hard to categorise, and possibly difficult to handle? Her fellow contenders were astonished that she had been eliminated - one said that he should have been the one to go, another normally rather arrogant young man said she was the best of all of them, and a third dissolved into tears.
Zoe will undoubtedly get a recording contract. There have been rumours (denied) that Hearsay want her to join them to replace a singer who recently left. Let us sincerely hope that if she gets a solo contract she is able to demonstrate her versatility and long- term potential, and not made to become another record industry victim who is spat out as soon as the next fad comes along (who remembers Maureen Evans in 1963, a great singer of standards who was made to sing teeny-bop trivia?). If she sings like this at 16, what could she be like at 33? Could Eva sing like this at 16? Sorry, I don't mean to be sacriligious.

Sincere apologies-I'm in the wrong website. I just wanted to tell people about my adoration for the finest singer since Tracy Nelson (she was just as ignored) and to say that I discovered Eva Cassidy around the same time as my mother died and that Autumn Leaves makes my pain numb just through the sheer sublimeness of her voice but apparently by all the other letters in this guestbook I'm visiting the Simon Barley web page (wow he must've been a great singer by all the attention he's got!). What makes Eva so special for me? She didn't sing she bled! I don't hear the words coming from her mouth I feel them oozing from the pores of her skin. My friend gave me a copy of this remarkable singer's CD, knowing that I love female vocolists. I first heard Eva on BBC radio singing over the rainbow and immediately new that I had to here and know more about this incredible voice. I have since read the book songbird and find that we have a lot in common. Not only is our birthday on the same day(although i am few years older) I also paint and play the guitar.

I am so excited, I just recieved my copy of the book "Songbird" from amazon.co.uk I was so happy to see it get here so fast!!! I can hardly wait to build a fire, put on all of Eva's cd's, watch the snow falling out side and begin to read this book. After almost 2 years of listening to Eva sing, her songs still bring tears to my eyes, and some just make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. I am an avid music lover, never have I found a singer that keeps me replaying their music like Eva's. I just never grow tired of hearing that beautiful voice reach deep into my heart and touch my soul. I must tell you how I came to hear Eva's music. Last night for the first time I sat down at my computer to burn some CD's. I started searching for my favorite song - "Fields of Gold" - performed by Sting. When I came across Eva's name I downloaded the song and I was absolutely mezmerized by her incredible voice. I just started to cry and I'm not sure why! I've never had this sort of reaction to anyone's music! Five hours later (not even stopping for dinner) I had downloaded & listened to every song I could find and made a CD of Eva for my family & friends.I had to find out more about her as I could not believe I had not heard of her before. Me again, I don't know why that first one sent I didn't have a chance to finish it!
The first time I heard Eva was when I heard her on T.V, there was a documentary on her! I had wanted to hear her album, Songbird' for a long time and when I was babysitting for my next door neighbour I saw they had the album-I simply had to listen to it!
When i did I have to say i was not surprised to find that the other songs on the album were as good if not better than her rendition of, 'Somewhere over the rainbow' and I cried. I was touched by the sheer emotion and soul she put into every performance. I was deeply moved and received the much wanted album for christmas this year after much nagging!
My mum has listened and agrees, she has a quality to her voice that many singers cannot claim for themselves! I am a singer and would dearly love tyo singsome of these songs, though I am sure i would not be able to do them justice!
It is sad that Eva was so young and talented when she died suddenly of cancer, yet her message and voice is now heard throughout the world and this in itself is a gift!
Her voice was God given and what a wonderful God we have-for allowing us to hear this beauty singing through our speakers!
To her parents- thank the Lord for the daughter he gave you and I pray that He will give you and all your family the strength each day to cope with your loss!

im a fifteen year old school boy and in a time and place where Urban music is all the hype, im not ashamed of telling all my mates that Eva Cassidy is by far my favourite singer. When I first heard her sing her rendition of 'Fields of Gold' as the music for a summary of the 2001 World Athletics Championships, i couldn't help but cry. me, a fifteen year old boy, cry!
But her voice is so beautiful, and it really touched me.

Right at the top of the album charts for the year?! No one else has ever done anything like that without massive promotion. You've done it by word of mouth. You're something very special and you mesmerize everyone you touch. I know you don't care much about stardom and you're right about that.
But I hope you're somehow aware of something else that really is important: You inspire musicians all over the world to work harder at their craft and you teach aspiring vocalists what singing is all about. You're a good teacher too! Perhaps one day your voice can again grace the earth as your spirit melds with another. What a wonderful legacy that would be!
You also help people like me keep a sense of what's really important. How I wish everyone in this world could be tuned into your message. Maybe someday.

This is a nice way to keep the spirit alive. I came aware of Eva through a TV-program in Norway a short time ago.
(Amazon.co.uk) I got the book yesterday, read and looked in it long into last night, while listening to her recorded voice. I have taken a picture today, and sent it to Laura Bligh displaying Eva paintings (page 56). That's how "far" I got the first day. The book is honest and interesting to read, and she sure was gifted and had her own mind of things.
As I understand there are still some songs yet not available (THE ROSE, DESPERADO).

One of my best friends told me "You have to hear this album-and you have never heard "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" until you hear Eva's arrangement. No artist has touched me so deeply as Eva Cassidy has. I was to leave the house, when I heard "Somewhere over the rainbow" on the radio, and could just not leave before I had finished listening and memorized the name of the artist. Later on I saw the TV program that other have referred to, and was downright crying when I learned to know her more, and heard that she died in -96. Well, I have dried my tears away and I am so glad that there are good recordings of her. Such a voice, such a non-artist with a voice that artist just wish they had.

What's New Page: I see Doug of Pennsylvania spotted the comments about Eva in the review of the 'Joe Somebody' film.

I just discovered Eva's singing three days ago. I was shopping on Ebay's Half.com and saw a few of her cd's listed for sale. Not having heard her before I searched some music file sharing sites to see if I could find any of her songs listed. I am so grateful for these services. I will now go out and buy all of her music I can find. I have never heard such an expressive artist, emotive vocal performances and just plain beautiful singing. I found about Eva Cassidy on a weekly news segment.
I had never heard of her, but her voice sounded so very familiar. In fact, I was amazed at the purity of her voice and wanted to hear more. I went the next day to get one of her CD's. I wasn't sure which one to choose
so I choose Live At Blues Alley. I was totally blown away!!!! With this particular album I couldn't be picky.
I enjoyed every song on this album. Eva could easily cross the borders of jazz and rock and roll. I just started enjoying jazz and all of its dimensions and Eva though she is not with us today could easily be named among some of the greats of music!! Her music helps me to really chill out!!!! Her music is the kind of music that you sit on your front porch and watch the sunset of a autumn sun go down and revel in your memories. Thank you Eva for such a wonderful talent

One day my mom called me on the phone and said that she had the most incredible song for my wedding. Song Brid which was written by Christine McVie and sung by Fleetwood Mac the first time I heard the song. BUT when I put Eva's CD in for the first time and that incredible voice started to sing, I just felt that this was a gift from God to hear the voice and know the story of such a strong person. I don't even know how to go about writing this... I first heard a version of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" that completely blew me away a year ago or so, but never heard who was performing it. I often wondered who it was until just this past Saturday when I was at a local audiophile store auditioning some Sonus Faber speakers. I didn't have my trusty Patricia Barber CD with me so the salesman offered his choice- Time After Time... he pushed 'play' and the magic bloomed from the drivers as song after glorious song rolled out fronted by the most majestic voice I've ever heard. I sat there listening to the whole cd waving off the salesman often as he questioned if I'd like to hear a different cd. I found out who was singing at the end and drove over to my local 'Barnes and Noble' to see if I could purchase it. They didn't have the cd, but they did have a few others- including the one with 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow'. My hair almost stood on end as I saw that song and I knew that it was she that I heard singing the song on the radio in the past. I simply feel in love with her voice and style... then I read of the tragic events of 1996. I felt like one who has just read 'Romeo and Juliet' for the first time- the story is so good, but you wish beyond all things that you could re-write the ending.
I am a musician schooled in Jazz which opens me to her genius, but most of all I have become a fan of her's regrettably too late to say "Thank You for sharing your gift" in person.
I don't know if they have internet access in Heaven, but if they do and you are reading this Eva- "Thank you for what you have left behind".

Today I happened to be standing in a Starbucks waiting for a coffee when I heard Eva singing 'Woodstock' on the store radio. I'd never heard this version of the classic Mitchell song before and I couldn't recognize the voice. I asked the girl behind the counter what cd was playing on their radio. Shortly thereafter I found myself buying 'Time after Time' from the record store down the street. As I listen to Eva while sitting in my car I was struck by the comments within the jacket cover of the album; died at 33. What a loss...what a gift! I sat there and listened for several tracks, just soaking up her voice, jazzy and sweet. And now I sit here typing my thoughts to the few who have been somehow touched by this incredible singer like I have.

Eva's parents said that she believed in reincarnation. I'm sad that she's no longer with us, and I'm sad there won't be any more Eva songs, but whatever you believe about the after life, Eva got her wish.
She has been reincarnated in the hearts and minds of everybody that's been touched by her story and then tried to write down how they feel about her music.

For a few hours I shut out the world and escaped to heaven. With headset firmly in place my collection of (6) Eva Cassidy CD's were lined up and played one after the other. Made me appreciate all the more the emotion and feeling in Eva's voice as she performed at what she was happiest at doing " all I want to do is sing". You deeply touched my soul and emotions Eva - Like never before - you took me on a rollercoaster ride of joy and appreciation of life. I am a long time fan of Eva, (maybe I only came across her music a year ago but I feel like she has been apart of me forever). I have just been reading on the internet about a singer by the name of Leslie Curtis, (who apparently sounds very much like Eva) travelling the UK performing 'A Musical tribute to Eva Cassidy' throughout February.
I have not heard her sing, but wondered if anyone knew of her tour dates?(other than reading, Milton Keynes, High Wycombe, Cornwall and Peterborough) especially nearer to London.

A talk show host in Houston mentioned that he had heard the greatest voice ever somewhere the day before. I got my first album, listened to the great voice and then started searching the web. I first saw the 'Wizard of Oz' thirty years ago when I was 10. That night I asked my mum to sing 'Over the Rainbow' to me,which she did. I heard Eva's version in a record shop and bought it. When I got home I played it, I have never been moved so much by a song, it was not just a song it was something else. As I listened tears streamed down my face, an experience I will never forget. I discovered Eva via a radio station out of Los Angeles. They played Fields of Gold, and I had never been so touched by someone's music than I was with Eva's interpretation of that song. I went out that day and bought every Eva CD that was available to my touch! Since, I have shared Eva with only a few people, my partner listened to me babble on and on about Eva's tragic passing, and lovingly commented that I sounded as though I had lost a personal friend. I was flipping through TV stations the other weekend when I came across a program featuring performances of the U.S. ice skating team. I'm a Michelle Kwan fan, so I stayed on the station to watch her skate. I think you probably know what happened next. I was awed by the version of "Fields of Gold" I heard. I wondered who the artist was at the time, but didn't think much more about it. However, that song stayed with me, kept running through my head. It sounds silly, but something about it would just not let me go. I told my wife about it. Finally, I got on the Internet and went to a search engine. Other than Sting, Eva Cassidy was the only name that popped up. I had never heard of her before.
I entered the name on Google and found this Web site. After a while of reading about the CDs and looking at pictures, I realized that Eva was always referred to in the past tense. Sensing something was amiss, I went to the biography page and learned that she had died of cancer. I was heartbroken.
I don't buy many CDs, as I don't sit down and listen to music all that much. But that night, on my way home from work, I stopped at a mall and bought Songbird. I've been listening to it ever since. I still can't make it through Over the Rainbow without tearing up. Eva had the most beautiful voice I have ever heard, and it has really touched my life in a way that I never would have expected. Now I'm on a mission to spread the word and introduce her voice to others who might be equally touched by it.

I would have to agree that no singer has touched my soul the way she does every time i hear her voice! she was an amazing artist in every sense & one of my biggest problem is that i have never seen here perform! she is a legend in her own right! Also, in response to an entry made by a Terry which directed us to a couple of other web sites, I would like to thank him.
I especially liked the thoughts that were written about singers and songwriters on the site 'Cry Of A Songbird' at http://www.songbirdcry.com. When I visited that site, it hit me how true those words are about being transported to other places in our minds by songs and singers.
The first time I heard Eva sing, I felt that. Especially with my favorite song, "Over The Rainbow". Re the January poll, I was one of the people who entered "other" as my selection.
About two years ago I was on the phone to a customer whom I had often discussed the merits of various music, especially female singers from both the jazz and folk spectrums. I was suggesting to him that he should give Loreena McKennitt a listen when he told me that he had a CD that I would be interested in.
About 3 weeks passed, when in the mail I received a CD labelled "The Eva Cassidy Story". That night I played the CD and the next day I sought out "Blues Alley" and within 2 weeks had all the other CDs available at the time. The funny thing is that I had previously heard FOG on the radio, but had never heard who sang it. I had also seen "By Heart", had been tempted at the time to by it, but well I had never heard of Eva and the record shop did not have a listening post.
Later talking to my customer, it transpired that one of his client's was Didgeridoo (HOT) Records and he had been given several promotional CDs by his clients.
That original Cd has been listened to by countless people over the last two years, many who have become Eva fans.

I first heard her voice on the Vinyl Cafe (CBC radio show). They played "Over the Rainbow". It was the most beautiful rendition I had ever heard. I went and purchased Songbird as soon as I could and the store clerk was familar with her, and spoke highly of her talent and gifts as a vocalist.

I just want to say 'thank you' to everybody who helped me shower the Danish radio station P4 with email requests for Eva Cassidy songs on her birthday. They didn't play any Eva songs on February 2 as far as I know. Still our campaign must have made an impression, for I just got a mail from Erik Kramshøj that on P4 this Sunday (February 17) in his program "Spadestik" they will do something on Eva. It is a program for the serious rock fan (if such a creature exists), so chances are it will be something more in-depth than just playing a single track. Viva Eva !

Hi Laura, I have recently been able to find a copy of Songbird - Eva's story in hardback. What a fabulous read. So wonderful to know more about her life and her initiation into the wonderful world of music. Her interpretation and re arranging of songs was part of her wonderful gift - add to that the wondrous voice of an angel and I realize how truly blessed we are to have the albums that we have.

My mom introduced me to Eva's version of Over the Rainbow... she said it was b/c Eva's voice reminded her of mine. I picked up the CD that night just to hear more of this remarkable, beautiful voice. This is about the People get ready video. I have tried to figure out the right time especially for Scandinavian viewers of the Top Of The Pops 2. I think BBC Prime is the channel for all Europeans not living in the UK. On this channel Top Of The Tops 2 can be watched on Fridays 16.15 (CET= Central European Time) and it is repeated on Saturday 23.30 and on Sunday 10.00. This means that the video probably will be shown on March 1 and repeated on March 2 and 3. Am I right or wrong? Can anyone help me? Please...

I was introduced to Eva Cassidy's music on the 22nd of Dec, 2001. I have since tried to turn on as many people as I know to Eva as I can't remember the last time a vocalist has stirred me as much as she has. I'm a songwriter and had gone over to a friend's home whose partner is a co-writer of some of my stuff, with an actress\jazz vocalist friend of mine to visit for a bit before Christmas. My friend's partner had put on Eva's Songbird disc and from the first notes of "Fields of Gold" I was mesmerized as was my actress friend. We insisted on seeing the disc's leaflet as we had to know more about Eva and her incredible gift. As a thank you for my friend and his partner, I went out the next day and added to his collection of Eva's discs not to mention starting my own. As a songwriter you dream of having someone like Eva be moved by your creation enough that they would want to bring their own uniqueness to it. What Eva did for the songs she has recorded is beyond words. Those songwriters must be so grateful that someone with Eva's ability found their tune. Thank you and bless you Eva. Happy Valentine's Day to you Eva. I must say that Eva is without doubt the best singer I have ever heard in my life. I have been listening to music as long as I can remember, maybe 5 or 6 years old. I'll be 51 years old in May 2002. My grandfather used to play fiddle at barn dances. Two uncles and three cousins and a brother have all played instruments in various bands over the last 35 years here locally. I was always the one singing, but never professionally. Then eight years ago somehow I got into the karaoke DJ business. So I have heard and seen all sorts of singing, but none that can compare with Eva. There is a lot of hidden talent everywhere, people that just won't get up and sing like Eva when she started out. Oh well anyway this was just supposed to be a Valentine's wish for Eva. On this day of hearts let us remember that is where Eva sang from her heart and some other ethereal place we can only imagine. Peace to all...love to Eva 4ever

To anyone interested:
I just returned from a few weeks in Australia/New Zealand, and had a few nice encounters with Eva fans down there. Several of my old musician friends were well up to date with developments regarding the Eva Cassidy Band, and I had to sign quite a few albums on behalf of Chris, Keith and Lenny!
I spent a very pleasant few hours with Graeme Regan (CEO of Hot Records, the Australasian distributors) and was able to fill him in on some details of the band's history. His operation is doing well, and he is a fine representative for our music.
Several folks in New Zealand (my homeland) wanted to know if the EC Band will ever play together again (unlikely), and if Chuck Brown would ever get down there (I haven't spoken to him since returning).
I see that Laura has taken the website to new heights -- what a remarkable job she does for us all.

When I was working as a waitress in 1999, my boss's daughter brought Songbird into our restaurant to play. She had been dining in another restaurant with her boyfriend and felt (as nearly everyone does who is mesmerised by her voice) compelled to ask 'who is that artist'.
As mentioned previously by Maggie, USA listening to Eva's voice makes you believe that there is in fact a place where dreams really do come true. Her voice is medicine to my ears, in a word beautiful. Thank-you very much Eva.

The first time I heard Eva's voice was on ABC in 2001 (I believe) and it brought me to tears. I was haunted by her story and by her voice in my mind until I could purchase my first Eva CD. Even today I feel that I am in the presence of God and His angels when I listen to Eva.
Tonight I introduced an ole country guitar pickin' guy to Eva's voice and songs, and he was tremendously moved. Had to write down the name so he can buy her CDs. That voice ... it touches everyone. Just pure peace and beauty.
Eva's songs are the kinds of songs I have loved to sing all of my life but they were never so popular as they are through Eva's arrangements.
I know the angelic chorus was greatly improved with the addition of Eva's glorious voice! So very sorry we lost her at such a young age. I will enjoy her music until the day I die.

Once again, thanks to all those of you who emailed requests for Eva Cassidy songs to the Danish radio station P4 on Eva's birthday. I am not really sure how much notice they took of our little campaign, for although they did feature Eva in the program Spadestik on the evening of Sunday 17 February, it turned out that this was in response to an email I sent them a while ago asking Mr Erik Kramshoej, the host of the program, to play some of Eva's songs since as a Dane I was beginning to feel embarrassed that Eva is still largely unknown in Denmark although she has long since been discovered by all you British, Americans and Germans etc.
For twenty minutes, 10.10-10.30 PM Sunday evening, Mr Kramsh oej played Eva Cassidy and talked about Eva Cassidy on the largest Danish radio station. His twenty minutes on Eva followed right after twenty minutes on the Danish band Savage Rose, whose singer Annissette is by many considered one of the greatest Danish singers ever. Savage Rose has been based in the US for the last few years (see www.thesavagerose.com and www.savagerose.com) and has had an American cult following ever since the 1970s. Turning from Savage Rose to Eva, Mr Kramshoej spoke of the great power of the human voice as an instrument and said that just as amazing as its power is its variability. He said that another truly great voice, though one quite different from that of Annissette, was the voice of the American singer Eva Cassidy. He then played Wayfaring Stranger, read my email, and mentioned the reasons that she has not received the recognition she deserves: Eva's stylistic versatility, her shyness and "un-commercial" attitude as well as the fact that she is dead. He made the shrewd guess that the CDs that are now released internationally must originally have been released by small companies, for he could not believe that nobody in the business should have taken notice of a singer with such a magnificent voice during her lifetime. He then played Bridge over Troubled Water, and thereafter talked about the increasing commercialism that makes radio stations use software to decide what to play and makes them likely to shun artist that do not fit neatly into categories and genres. But, as he said, his program is not limited by such considerations. He then played Natural Woman and after some more talk rounded off his Eva Cassidy theme with a final example of her stylistic versatility by playing Let the good times roll.
I hope our dark little country becomes a little brighter after this.

I am signed to Universal Records Australia as singer/songwriter, and have found that dealing with record companies can be trying on the spirit and creative sense of self... but after reading Eva's biography (and weeping forever), I found a new strength in myself, and in my creative integrity. I love a lot of music, but Eva's style is ridiculously brilliant. She has inspired me to return to the centre of making music, which I believe begins and ends with its simplicity. She made me see the beauty in songs, not for their production or any of that shit, but in their melodies and their lyrics. She brought out the best in songs by believing in them for what they were ... beautiful. I only hope as an artist, I can give people as beautiful a sense of easiness and wonder that Eva gave her songs. I wish only to be able to have met her so as to be shown the joy that it sounds so like she invested in her music. She was a miracle.
